Goodbye Dots
In dieser kleinen Animation ist zu sehen, wie sich das Chamäleon (SuSE-intern früher liebevoll “die Kröte” genannt), im Lauf der Zeit wandelte. Die ersten Jünger der kleinen unbeugsamen fränkischen Softwareschmiede erblickten ein Tierchen, dass mit leicht herabgezogenen Mundwinkeln nach links gewandt etwas hochbeinig auf einem S.u.S.E. Schriftzug stand (mit Punkten!). Zuerst verschwanden die Punkte, goodbye dots! Punkte in Abkürzungen sind unmodern, viele Grüße an die F.D.P. Dann fiel irgendjemandem auf, dass ein lachendes Chamäleon eine positivere Message für den Kunden darstellt. Seitdem lächelt die Kröte geheimnisvoll wie die Mona Lisa. Aber damit war noch keine Ruhe eingekehrt. Offensichtlich assoziieren wir als Betrachter etwas nach links zeigendes als konservativ, etwas nach rechts gewandtes dagegen als fortschrittlich. Also wurde die Kröte auch noch gewendet, schliesslich steht sie für fränkisches Linux und ist daher per se ein Zeichen für den Fortschritt. Als vorerst letzte Störung im ansonsten ruhigen Leben eines Firmenlogos wurde das Chamäleon in bester Tuning-Manier noch ein bisschen tiefergelegt und verlor ein bisschen an Beinlänge. Es bleibt spannend, was die Zukunft bringt.
Update:2003, zum Release von SuSE Linux 9.0, wurde das Logo komplett runderneuert. Geeko sieht jetzt aus wie sein eigener Ur-Enkel, das grün ist leuchtender geworden und er hat den Boden unter den Füssen verloren, denn ihm ist sein Strich abhanden gekommen. Aus SuSE ist SUSE geworden, die neue Schreibweise dürfte jetzt auch den letzten Journalisten verwirren. Und im SUSE LINUX Schriftzug hat sich ein rotes N eingeschlichen, welches von der Übernahme von SUSE durch NOVELL kündet. to be continued… |

In this small animation you can see, how the chamaeleon (SuSE internally in former times affectionately called “the toad”) changed itself, in the course of the time. The first friends of the small unbending Frankish software company saw a beastie turned to the left with down pointing corners of the mouth standing somewhat long-legged on a S.u.S.E. signature (with dots!). First the dots disappeared, goodbye dots! Points in abbreviations are unfashionable, many greetings to the F.D.P. Then somebody noticed that a laughing chamaeleon represents a more positive message for the customer. Since then the toad smiles mysterious like the Mona Lisa. But thus still there was no rest. Obviously we associate something showing to the left as conservatively, whereas something turned to the right as progressive. Thus the toad also turned, as it stands for Frankish Linux and is therefore by default an indication of progress. As by now last disturbance in the otherwise calm life of a company logo the chamaeleon in best tuning manners was set a little lower and lost a bit at leg length. It remains exciting, what the future will bring.
Update:2003, by the time of releasing SuSE Linux 9.0, the logo completely changed. Geeko now looks like his own great-grandchild. The green is brighter and he lost the ground because they took away the black line below his feet. SuSE became SUSE and this new notation may puzzle even the last journalists. Last but not least there is now a red N in SUSE LINUX, which announces the takeover of SUSE by NOVELL. to be continued… |
